At Highfield Middle School, we are determined that every pupil is given the opportunity to become an enthusiastic, independent and reflective student of English.
We recognise that success in English has a direct effect upon success in all other areas of the curriculum; and is crucial in a child’s overall development which prepares them for future education and success later in life. Therefore, the overarching aim is to promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written language, and to develop their love of literature through reading for enjoyment.
Skills and knowledge are interleaved and revisited throughout the curriculum in order to aid retention. We promote a deep and rich understanding of the English language and literature, which promotes the construction of connections within the subject and beyond. To ensure our curriculum is fully inclusive, all pupils are exposed to core learning which is adapted to take account of their needs as learners; pupils progress to more abstract concepts as they gain confidence.
We aim to ensure that all pupils:
- read easily, fluently and with good understanding
- develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information
- acquire a wide vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and knowledge of linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language
- appreciate our rich and varied literary heritage
- write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences
- use discussion in order to learn; they should be able to elaborate and explain clearly their understanding and ideas
- are competent in the arts of speaking and listening, making formal presentations, demonstrating to others and participating in debate
