The RE curriculum at Highfield offers a unique contribution to the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of all our pupils and aims to support wider community cohesion. Our ultimate goal is for each of our pupils to learn from and about religion so that they can use that knowledge to make sense of the world around them. In doing so, it is our belief that they will be able to appreciate the ways in which religious beliefs shape life and behaviour and also make links between those in their community and the wider world. 

At Highfield we examine a variety of world religions, consider non-religious views, research cultures and communities and discuss and evaluate our own beliefs. It is this holistic approach to religious education that enables our pupils to develop a clear understanding of beliefs around the world. Most recent SACRE guidelines state that coherent understanding comes from ‘studying one religion at a time (systematic study) before bringing together and comparing different traditions (thematic study). The thematic study allows pupils to draw together their learning each year’. This is something we have worked hard to incorporate into our R.E curriculum at Highfield and feel it will help to further support our pupils by enabling them to make connections and draw comparisons between different religions and beliefs.

Mutual respect is at the heart of our school ethos and at Highfield we promote acceptance, kindness, tolerance and understanding as core values whilst ensuring our pupils develop the ability to make reasoned and informed judgements about religious and moral issues. We teach a ‘broad and balanced knowledge rich curriculum’ as emphasised in the current Ofsted framework and believe that learning in RE should be explorative, engaging and exciting.
